I’m taking a quick break from the Mass Effect series to crochet something from another game I love, The Outer Worlds. This crochet pattern is for Martin Callahan, the Spacer’s Choice vendor on the Groundbreaker. He seemed in desperate need of a hug, so here he is in teddy form.
Equipment I used:
Yarn
I’ve listed the yarn I used below as its what I had on hand, but it can be any type of wool you prefer:
- Hobby Craft DK Cotton Blend 100g Yarn in each of these colours: Black, White, Pink
- Knitting Essentials Aran wool, in mustard yellow
- Bonus DK 100g Yarn in Tea Rose
- Kingcole DK Pricewise in Bottle Green
- Big Value Chunky 100g Yarn in Cream
Other equipment:
- 3 mm Crochet Hook the wool above recommends either 4-5mm, but for amigurumi crochet its recommended you go for a smaller hook to keep the stitches tight.
- A stitch marker I use a hair pin
- Wool needle for weaving in ends
- Toy Stuffing
- Pins for positioning pieces before attaching them.
- Marbles or something similar to add weight to the base
- Cardboard for adding shape to the hat

Face details
Eyes (Yarn: Black)
Use pins to mark where the eyes will be between rows 9 and 10, around 6 stitches apart.
- With a long piece of black yarn, weave with a wool needle between rows 9-10 for the first pupil. I weaved the yarn to half way through row 9 to make a small stitch, and went over that stitch again to make it more defined.
- Around the pupil, weave a circle with the same black yarn to act as the eye. This started at the top of row 9 and finished at the bottom of row 10.
- Using a new piece of black yarn, weave around the eye to make the crater lines. Leave some space between the lines so it isn’t a continuous circle. These are still weaved around rows 9 and 10 but sit slightly on row 8 and 11.
- Repeat the same for the other eye, around 6 stitches apart from the other eye.
- With another piece of black yarn, weave in the eyebrows above the eyes. On mine these are between rows 7 and 8.
Nose (Yarn: Cream)
- Between rows 10 and 11, in between both of the eyes, weave in a piece of cream yarn to make the nose. I went over this stitch a couple of times to make it more defined.
Cheeks (Yarn: Pink)
- Between rows 11 and 12, underneath the eyes to the left of the pupils, weave in a piece of pink yarn to add blush for the cheeks.
Mouth (Yarn: Black)
- Between rows 12 and 13, underneath the nose, weave in a piece of black yarn around 4 stitches long for the top of the mouth.
- From the line you’ve just weaved, weave the yarn back and forth over row 13 to make an upside-down triangle shape.
- After finishing the mouth shape, I weaved the yarn once again over the horizontal line at the top of the mouth to define it.
Once you’re finished adding the face details, stuff the head with toy stuffing.
Body – (Yarn: Black)
17. Mc 6 (6)
18. [inc] x6 (12)
19. [inc,sc] x6 (18)
20. sc, [inc,sc x 2] x5, inc, sc (24)
21. [inc, sc x 3] x6 (30)
22. [inc,sc x 4] x6 (36)
23. [inc,sc x 5] x6 (42)
24-28. scx 42 (42)
29. [dec, sc] x 14 (28)
30. sc,[dec, sc] x9 (19)
Weave in the tail and stuff the body, adding in 2-3 marbles or your choice of weight to the base. This is so the body stays upright when connected to the head.
31. Connect the head to the body with the thread left from the head.
Arms (x2) – (Yarn: Tea rose)
32. Mc 6 (6)
33. [inc, sc] x 2 (8)
34- 36. Sc x 8 (8)
Leave a long tail to attach it to the body
Legs (x2)- (Yarn: Black)
37. Mc x 6 (6)
38. [inc, sc] x 2 (8)
39-40. Sc x 8 (8)
Leave a long tail to attach it to the body
41. Pin the pieces to the body to secure them in place, add a small amount of stuffing if needed, and attach them to the body by weaving in the tails you’ve left on each piece.
Jacket – (Yarn: Bottle Green)
The left-hand side of the jacket is longer and wraps over the front of the body, the right hand side of the jacket then wraps over the front.
42. Ch x37, chain one turning stitch (37)
43. Sc x37 (37)
44. Sc x10, ch x10 for the first arm hole and skip 7 stitches before connecting the chain to the main piece, sc x13, ch x8 for the second arm hole and skip 5 stitches before connecting the chain to the main piece, sc x1 and inc x1 (38)
45. Inc x1, sc x3, sc x9 into the backloops of the arm chain, sc x 19, sc x8 into the backloops of the arm chains, sc x10 (51 when including arm loops)
46.Sc x10, stop at the arm loop (10)
47. Flip your work, sc x9 to the end
Cut the yarn and leave a tail to weave in later. Weave in a new piece of yarn into the left-hand side (when looking from the back) of the back section between the arm loops.
48. Sc x 16 between the arm loops (16)
49. Sc x 16 between the arm loops, sc x2 to connect onto the arm loop so there isn’t a gap (18)
50. Sc x 16 between the arm loops, sc x 3 to connect the other side to the arm loop so there isn’t a gap (19)
51. Sc x 19 between the arm loops (19)
52. At the top of the left-hand arm loop (when looking from the back), Sc x3 along the smaller front piece, inc x 2 (7)
53. Sc x 8 to the arm loop (8)
Cut the yarn and leave a tail to weave. The back of the jacket was loose for me, so by each arm loop on the inside of the jacket I pinched the material and weaved a short piece of yarn through it a few times to tighten the fit.
Weave in all the loose ends on the jacket.
Jacket detail
Embroidery (Yarn: Mustard yellow)
On the front right hand jacket piece, weave in a piece of yellow yarn along the edge, from the bottom of the arm loop up to the top of the arm loop. At the top of the arm loop, add a couple of extra stitches for the shoulder pad.
With another piece of yellow yarn, weave in some stitches on the left hand shoulder for the shoulder pad.
Buttons (Yarn: White)
Pin the front piece of the jacket down to where you want it to sit. In the centre of the front jacket piece, weave in a white piece of yarn 2 rows from the bottom for the first button. 2 rows above that weave in another button with the same white yarn.
Cut any of the loose ends from the yellow and white detail.
Close jacket (Yarn: Bottle Green)
Put the jacket on the body and pin the two front pieces in place. With a piece of green yarn, weave a few times between the two front pieces to close it around the body.
Top hat
Base of the hat (Yarn: Black)
54. Mc x 6
55. Inc x 6 (12)
56. [Sc, Inc] x6 (18)
57. sc x 2, [inc, sc] x 8 (26)
58. sc x 3, [inc, sc] x10, sc x1 (34)
Top of the hat (Yarn: Black)
59. Mc x 6
60. inc x 6 (12)
61. [sc, inc] x 6 (18)
62. sc x 18
Cut two cardboard circles that fit the area of the top of the hat. Put the first cardboard circle in the top of the hat, add some stuffing to the centre and put the other cardboard circle underneath it. Pin the top of the hat to the base and weave them together with black yarn.
Hat ribbon (Yarn: White)
63. Ch x 23 and connect together into a loop. Put this on the top hat.
